It was a bit weird to act with a witch, knowing what she was but not being able to relate or talk of this with others. But they had done so with Thomas since his youth and it couldn't be more complicated than explaining how their son was going to a special school out of Wales depite them not being rich enough to send their children to private schools. It had been even harder when justifying how he went and not their daughter Gwen. At least now they could simply say their son had moved to London, met someone and started a family. That was so incredible. Not only their son returned but she was a grandmother now. Emily Swancott felt truly blessed.
The werewolf thing had been something incredibly stressful and scary for the whole family, especially as Thomas explained that muggles had more chances of dying from a scratch or a bite. And there were all those bruises her son would inflict to himself when turned. Hearing that it was not something passed on through genes was a blessing then. "It's not? Oh thank goodness for that! It's such a relief." She understood why her son would worry but he should have known that this would not happen. She figured that wizards studied werewolves over the years and knew all that needed to be known about them. Little did she know of the terribel treatment they gave werewolves, treating them as nothing more than dangerous beasts even in human form. Thomas always made sure to hide that fact. He did say that their new Minister of Magic was far more open and moved against all forms of prejudice and discrimination but hid how they truly acted before that.
"You need to tell me what you like to eat. We'll prepare something good for them. I don't trust Edward will return with fish, he didn't go out to sea for work, so let's see what we can make them." Thomas did pick his love of cooking from someone and his mother wanted to make her best meal to welcome Heather into the family. They may not be married or engaged even but she was here for her son and she saw the spark in her boy's eyes. She also remembered how he used to push his girlfriend in the past upon knowing he was now a werewolf. To see him accept that he could be loved was all she wished for and more than enough of a reason to make something special for Heather.
